I am getting this error on scandisk:
Scandisk cannot read from the last cluster on drive c. This cluster is either damaged, or your system is not configured properly. Drive C may need to have Logical Block Addressing (LBA) enabled to work properly, or its disk partition may be incorrectly marked as a non-LBA partition.
I checked ny computer's BIOS setup utility.I have checked the BIOS settings and I can't find anywhere to enable the (LBA). The setting is exactly the same as it was before I started getting this error on normal reboot.

I tried going through the bios to autodetect but that didn't work.

When I run scanreg /fix or restore it wont scan. It just sits. Help

the only way of enabling LBA that i know of is when you create the partition itself. There are programs for fixing bad sectors that are damaged but the one i know of requires formatting. Someone else might know of more but thats what I know

what about getting the registry checker to work? any ideas there? the problem started with sbpci issues..so any suggestions are welcome

How about the scandisk from the floppy? Same results?

Ed,
I don't know how to run the scandisk from the floppy. Would you please instruct me. I don't have a back up boot disk but I do havea 98 CD Rom and I was trying to start it from there with no luck.
So, I am open to suggestions.
Thank

Please excuse me for jumping in here.

You should have an Emergency Boot Disk. You can create one as follows

-------------------------
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Startup Disk
Insert floppy>Create disk>Ok

Find scandisk on your drive and copy to floppy you just created.

Shutdown

Insert Startup disk and turn on machine.

After it boots type scandisk at prompt

Select drive you want to check (I wouldn't perform thorough check yet)

No, can do on this computer. The computer immediate go to the startup menu and will only go to the command prompt. It will not go to start, run etc. When I type in scanreg, scanprog, it goes to the register checker and just freezes. I tried copying a start book from bootdisk.com but it didnt work

Only thing I can say from what ive read that you can do is either delete the partition and reformat the drive or if that dont work run a program such as spinrite which is made to help hard drives with bad sectors. If anyone else has any other ideas that im not thinking of or mentioning feel free to post them.

can spinrite be downloaded from another computer copied to floppy disk and then used on the computer with the 98 window problem?

Check out your bios settings, sounds to me like you have C: set as the first/only boot device. Change it so A: is the first boot device and C: is the second boot device. Then try smitee's recommendations again.

If you cannot get your computer to boot from A:, then, restart your computer, and as it begins to boot, press F8 repeatedly (about twice a second) until the startup menu appears. From there, select Command Prompt. Once the command prompt appears, then run scanreg /fix and/or scandisk.

Fyi; scanreg /fix /opt does much better, that is if you must run scanreg /fix,,,

Okay electronics.
Cobolkid..I changed the BIOS to recognize the floppy first HDR second disable third. But it is still booting from the hard drive. Also I can't get an A prompt only c:

I ran scanreg /fix and it freezes on repairing c:\windows\system.dat:
Looking for valid system registry keys
Checking system registry structure
Rebuilding system registry
all of that is displayed but nothing happens

Sounds like either bad disc or hard drive or bad sectors. That is my guess but I could be wrong. If the hard drive has been used alot or is old it could have some bad sectors on it.
