I am running 98se, My monitor seems to flicker once about every ten munites. I've checked the task manager and nothing is scheduled to happen at this interval. Previously, i had suspectes norton antivirus, but It only checks for updates once a day. I disabled microjunk's findfast a couple of months ago. This doesn't seem to effect performance, it is just annoying.

please help me make it stop!

Do you have IE 6.0? My system does the same thing. The screen goes totally white for a couple of seconds and then refreshes. Sometimes it does it twice. O suspect IE 6.0, but not sure. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Hi viler
One reason for the flicker is that the pc is schedule to go to Screen Saver mode but the Screen Saver scheme/program is no longer available.

I am running 6.0, hmm it could be the culprit.
I am not running any screen savers, i hate them.
I have the machine set to run at full power at all times.
on and off are my only options
thanks for the help

This phenomenon will interrupt my screen saver and if power management is enabled it will interrupt it and turn my screen back on. I don't know what is causing it, yet. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

I think my culprit was McAfee Virus Scan. I use the online version with the Clinic, and McAfee just had an upgrade and after the upgrade the problem has gone away. I had it disabled and it would still do it, but not any more. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Perhaps your monitor is degaussing itself when it does that.

I've got two computers that were doing the same thing. Both have McAfee and after the upgradw they don't do it anymore "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

The problem that you all are seeing -

- if you see a 'flicker',
- the system stops responding during the flicker and then going OK again,
- and (the telltale) any little icons in the bottom right hand corner by the clock (the System Tray) disappering after the flicker

is Explorer crashing. The GDI automatically restarts the shell executable after the crash, if recoverable. The usual cause is a shell extension that has been installed is causing an instability. Virus scanners that add functions to the right-click menus or monitor all traffic, utilities that add functions to the desktop or right-click menu, or a TSR running in the background are usual suspects. And yes, updating to IE 5 or 6 can cause problems, as Explorer and IE are linked after Win95.

First try going into /Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Tools menu/System Configuration Utility and select 'Selective Startup' and uncheck 'Load startup items'. Reboot. Did that solve the problem? If so a background program is causing it.

If you have the above symptoms and that checkup didn't work more information can be provided...let me know.

Thank you.
Your mileage may vary...

As an old monitor tech, did you try a different monitor? I have seen prolems like that and it could be dust or a bad component in the monitor. good luck
