Hey guys; I have an 8x24 KSU and I'm trying to configure a custom 911 setup.

I've got three (external) lines;

1 - Wireline to Bell CO
2 - Bluetooth Cellphone adaptor (uses my cellphone as a "line"
3 - Vonage VoIP adaptor

Basically, how I'd like to set it up is as such: Any phone set calling 911 would be routed out of Line 1 (the hardline CO, which has ALI/ANI info for my premis), any long distance call (IE, 1+xxx+xxx+xxxx) routed out Line 3, and any other call through Line 2.

Is this something that is possible? I've asked a local installer of these systems and he said he didn't know, otherwise I would have had him do it.

Thanks for the help!!

If the installer reads and understands the Norstar documentation, then he/she can program what you want. The system has the capability to do what you want. Getting your installer to do it is another thing...

I don't beleive the 8x24 has routing in it since it did not do T1's so your system can't do it. If you assign the lines to the phones and tell people what lines to use. Or upgrade to MICS Norstar that will do it.

You might be able to set up 3 outgoing groups:

9 for local. 8 for long distance, 7 for others call it personal.

Toll restrict lines associated to 9 and 7 and let them know to dial 9911 for emergencies.

Legally "911" has to be able to reach 911 around here, not "9911", otherwise that suggestion would work perfectly.

I think I've figured out a way to do it, its a matter of getting it to work - that's another story. I'm a n00b with this stuff.

Around here" is where? Every jurisdiction is different...

Sorry but this doesn't make sense. The CICS/MICS/BCM is capable of setting up a route/destination to accomplish this. But your statement implies that "in your area" all telephone system would have to be able to do this function. And that is just not happening. Many system require you to press an outside line button or dial an access code.

I am not a Lawyer, but from a legal standpoint this actually could make sense - simply pass a law that says you must be able to dial "911" without any specific prefix or line button. The tell everyone "If your current system can't do it you must scrap it and get one that does"

Ideally there should be some grandfathering period, but not all laws make sense to everyone.

Also, the chances of getting caught with a non-compliant system are small, but it only takes one incident where someone gets flustered and something bad happens because "I dialed 911 and couldn't get thru

It wouldn't be a bad idea moving forward to force 911 to take a line and dial out. But it would need to be grandfathered or maybe a must comply date. Unions could get involved (in Canada Workmen's compensation) and force employers to comply.

Certainly would generate a lot of new business for us. Which is a good thing, right? Let's start a campaign and force the issue with our governments.

Why? If people need to access a line, then you access a line first! What happened to informing and training people how to use phones? Is everybody so stupid, that you have to cater to the lowest common denominator of stupidity?

It is amazing what passes for intelligence today!

We don't need anymore nanny states!
