911 calls on an MPLS SIP network? 1

Have an S-8700 connected via ISDN-PRI to an Adtran box that connects to several other Adtran boxes at remote sites via SIP trunks. They want to have the remote sites to be able to call 911 through the SIP's back to the S-8700 and have the emergency vehicles show up at their respective remote sites.

They don't want to use a POTS line, they want it via the SIP trunks.

1) Can it be done (responsibly) and if so,
2) How can it be set up? I assume emergency services has to be in on the scheme as well.

I don't know of how this could be done without local POTS lines - but if it can be done, what happens if the SIP trunking is down? Wouldn't you lose your emergency call capability?

If SIPs are down, no 911, bad idea, but that isn't the question. Can 911 calls be made to give out the correct remote site address?

All this sounds like a bad idea. Put a loop or ground start line in each remote gateway for 911 calling. Cheap insurance IMO.

Putting in a separate line, using a fax machine, all this may be true but not the point.
Point is:
1) Will it work?
2) Has anyone done it?

I KNOW it's a bad idea...... but that isn't the question.

ATT IP Flex service will do it but that is SIP trunk to the cloud then to whatever/however your sites are connected. I haven't done it... yet...
