I need to setup a new W2K server for Exchange 2K only.

Any ideas on the spec I need.

300 Mhz proc
256MB of RAM
cd rom and all that good stuff of course
if possible, a single HDD for system/exchange program files, a RAID1 array for each set of tranaction logs, and a RAID 5 array for each database

the disk setup would be for ideal situations of course....but you should defiantely at least haev the tranaction logs and database on a seperate disk.
not sure if its in your budget but....
I found that a good 1.4 intel server with 750+MB RAM and the above disk config makes a damn good setup

You should be asking yourself how your company plans to grow in the next 3-5 years when you spec an exchange box. Remember that communication is one of the most important characteristics of a successful organisation.

I have just built a new Exchange 2k box that is currently setup for 75 users.

It is:

Duel P3 1.4GHz
1 Gb ECC ram
Ultra 160 Raid 5 Hardware (3 * 36Gb 10000rpm SCSI disks)
Teamed network cards (2 cards)
DLT 40/80 backup
Arcserv 2000 backup software + Exchange agent

Exchange standard has a 16Gb database limit so disk size is not the most crucial part. RAM followed by processing/ disk access is the most important part of Exchange server. I will be reviewing my RAM state in a year so allow for expansion on the motherboard there.

The company i work for is expecting a 80% growth in the next 3 years. Exchange is something you want to set-up and not worry about it for a few years (around 3-5). Over budgeting will allow for any surprises.

Currently the box i have is extremely efficient and i have not had one problem in its 6 months of uptime. I learnt the hard way by inheriting an low spec Exchange 5.5 box before hand.

Hope this helps.
