6513 gbic link on sup720 slva mode..?

Guys,
just another Q;

I have two 6513s linked via SUP720 gbic interfaces as follows;

6513A SUP720(slave)prt1---fibre--prt1 6513BSUP720(slave)
10.30.5.1 255.255.255.252--------10.30.5.2 255.255.255.252

But I cant ping between the two even though the stats show link and protocol up on the Supervisor gigabitethernet interface. Is there something about not passing traffic over ports on the supervisor when in slave mode???
