6513 Flash and ios upgrade...

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade the IOS on two new 6513s. My problem is I dont know to where in memory I should be copying:

copy tftp flash ?

copy tftp bootflash ?

copy tftp sup-bootflash ?

Can someone please explain the difference between these and advise me as to which one I sould us?

I assume from the text you posted that you are running Native IOS?

If this is the case once the switch has booted then the following are the flash locations:

bootflash: - MSFC Bootflash
sup-bootflash: - Supervisor Bootflash
flash: - not realy relevent but will default to MSFC bootflash I think.

Generally you would store the IOS on the sup-bootflash: and configure it to boot from it:

boot system flash sup-bootflash:sup22-12.1-image.bin
!

If you have a Sup2 it is recommended (though not essential) to copy the MSFC Boot image to the MSFC flash in case you loose the IOS or it gets corrupted, or if you wish to convert to Hybrid code later. With a Sup1 it is a requirement to have the MSFC boot image available in the MSFC flash, with a Sup720 I think this is similar to a Sup2 - i.e. not essential but recommended.

thanks very much for your input. I'm familiar with troubleshooting and configuring Routers but always avoided the IOS stuff til now. As ever I have a few more questions if you can help;

By the way I'm using 2 sup720's runnig native IOS.

1. IS MSFC located on the Supervisor module?

2. Is sup-bootflash on the hardware of the Supervisor module or on the removeable pcmcia card?

3. You mention copying the MSFC Boot image ( what is this? ) to the MSFC flash......can you explain this in layman terms and maybe step through the commands?

The MSFC is a card on the Supervisor module
sup-bootflash is onboard the Supervisor, sup-slot0 or
sup-slot1 is the PCMCIA card

6513s with Native IOS on the switch and MSFC:
bootflash - is for the MSFC2, for example,
c6msfc2-boot-mz.121-13.E3.bin

sup-bootflash - is for the Supervisor, for example,
c6sup22-jk2sv-mz.121-13.E4.bin
