60% CPU time being used but no process using it 2

Hi all

i have a fujitsu laptop with wind xp which is playing up.

It is using around 50% CPU and the hard drive is constantly being accessed but task manager reports that no process is using any CPU time or accessing the HD. This happens in either safe mode or a normal boot.

This machine has had a number of viruses but is now reporting clean, and clean od spyware.

Does anyone know what could be using the CPU time and HD?

Perhaps some kind of auto-defragging program? Like Diskeeper?

I cannot believe task manager shows no activity in HD. How are you checking that?

As far as i can tell, there is no 3rd party defrag software installed, only windows defrag.

If there was an App defraging, then shouldnt it appear in task manager as using CPU time and show read/writes to disk?

When you say no processes, is the box in the bottom left corner saying Show processes from all users checked?

Windows does its own 'quick defrag' to speed up program access in background when it detects the computer is on idle time

Hi all

the all users box is checked.

having used 60% CPU time everytime i switched it on for the last 2 days, its now decided to stop. it must have been doing a background defrag.

as an extra... one of the tools i use to find out what's using my CPU is a little Prog called Process Explorer...

Breaks down all the processes - and show Deferred Procedure Calls which isn't shown in Taskmgr.
