6.0 printing problem

Recently we upgraded our QuarkXpress to 6.0 in order to use in OS10. The first problem was that I could not open 5.0 documents in 6.0. I called Quark tech support and they had me do the following:

Go into the Printer list/center and add the following: 127.0.0.1.

After that was processed, I was able to open 5.0 documents in 6.0 and save them as 6.0 documents.

NOW...the problem I am having is that 6.0 won't allow me to adjust the set up (paper size and orientation) from our HP Laserjet 4050 series (our main printer.) Most of our projects are 8.5x14 and such.

If I try to print from the 127.0.0.1, it just idles saying "attempting to connect with host 127.0.0.1...." This printer however allows me to adjust the page setup.

How can I fix this problem so we can use our main printer and adjust the page setup?

This happens wether it is a brand new 6.0 document made in 6.0 or a converted 5.0 document in 6.0

frustrated and thankful for any answers.

Not sure how this applies to opening Xpress 5 docunemts but the IP address is called a loopback address that you use for testing your ethernet hardware. It tells the computer to send a message to it's own address to see if everything works.

Because your not actually sending to an existing printer, Quark sees no restrictions on what you can and can't change in the parameters of the print dialog for 127.0.0.1.

First, is this the USB for Mac printer?

Second, do you have the OS X drivers installed? Stupid I know but necessary question none the less.

Third, what version of OS X are you using? 10.2?

I have some ideas but I have to think about this.

Kyle,

thanks for the response.

To answer your questions this is what I know:

1) the printer we use is not directly connected to the computer, it is through a general network of printers we have.

2) I beleive the OS X drive have been stalled because I can print fine from other applications. Let me double check that with someone.

3) We are using OS 10.2.6.

In the meantime, did you try booting up in Classic mode to see if you could work from it? Could be something with OSX and not Quark.

I went through and tried to print a different paper size and they don't work in illustrator (nothing! will print from illustrator.), and I set up Photoshop to print out a sheet 8.5x14 and it didn't work (it printed off a 8.5x11).

I haven't tried booting up in classic os9 and then using Quark6.0. That would defeat the purpose of using 6.0 when I still have 5.0.

Also, I did just get the update of 10.2.8 today and installed that.

any additional help is appreciated.

Ok, so it seems that your printer is not working with the OS X environment itself not just Quark.

Let me verify something. This printer does work in OS 9? Did you connect to it using AppleTalk or an IP address?

If AppleTalk try this:
Go to the Print Center (Applications -> Utilities -> Print Center) and hit the Add button. In the dropdown box at the top of the pop up box, select Appletalk and in the resulting list of printers, select yours. Underneath the list is another dropbox in which you select the Other... option. This brings up your standard file menu. Navagate to the OS 9 System Folder -> Extensions -> Printer Descriptions and select the PPD that is for your printer. It should then add itself to the printer list.

I included this description for other people as it's a tricky way to get your printer working if there are no OS X drivers out. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

Kyle,

You did it! That was the answer to my problem. I did what you suggested (add the printer, navigate in OS9 extensions etc.) and I can now print my quark 6.0 projects in OSX !!

Thank you for all of your help. I appreciate it!

take care and have a good weekend,
Jennifer
