513 terminal emulator -- need beta testers

i made some changes to PuTTY telnet/ssh client so it now can understand most of 513 terminal escape codes and keycodes as well -- that means you can use it with definity. i use it myself every day and i'm pleased with it enormously -- i think it's the most handy telnet application ever. but i do need some beta-testing done before i can consider my code stable and give it to putty's author to incorporate into future releases. question is: is there somebody willing to do this beta-testing for me? :) i'd really be thankful if somebody try how it behaves under different versions of windows and in different environments. unfortunately putty cannot work with serial ports now (but i'm working on it), but you can use it to manage your definity switches via c-lans.

if you think you can help me with it, please download the binary: putty.exe and optionally the registry file with default settings: putty.reg. i think putty's settings are very self-explaining and straitforward, nevertheless i included some defaults as well. to add them, run putty.reg and it will result in windows asking you whether you really want to make changes into registry. in windows nt/2000/xp it will require administrator's rights, though. then just run putty.exe and you'll see default connection set up. change ip address and port to your needs and try to connect.

please contact me if you have any questions. i really hope somebody will try it. :)

Cool, working pretty good here on WinXP

could you possible add the feature of being able to use the "page down" and "page up" which relate to keys F7 and F8

mainly use these when doing a "list station" or whatever..

Thanks

well, those keys should work already. please check terminal -> keyboard settings, the function keys should be set to at&t 513. the putty.reg file should set the default settings with this option and some terminal settings (colors and such) to almost fully emulate the asa look&feel but maybe i forgot to check something. :)

my main concern is 513 escape codes -- character sequences that make terminal look like terminal and not the wierd strings of symbols. so if you'll see the screen distorted or symbols missing or something displays not like in asa, please tell me.

Pretty cool. I am trying it on XP, but it seems the reg settings are not changing correctly when i run your reg file. I do have admin rights, so I know its running the file. I had to manually change it so the function and backspace keys would work. And I had to set the telnet negotiation to passive instead of active manaully. It works great other than that. Maybe the reg file is just messed up.

Thanks,

Josh

well, i suppose it can be messed up, because it's not some kind of "installation" or "setup", it's just part of the working registry on my own machine. maybe you should run putty first, it would create its registry tree, and then run putty.reg to modify it. well, i'm no windows guru, i'm just a trifle unclear how this strange & mystifying registry works. :) i'll try it on some "clean" machine and see what should happen.
anyway, this reg file just modifies default settings -- you can do it pretty well by hands within putty itself. basically you should set backspace key behaviour and function keys, other options are irrelevant for operation.

p.s. well, i found the bug in registry file. it was messed up, you were right. :) please download it again and apply -- then you should see how putty is supposed to look like in definity mode. :)

I tried the new reg file and it works great now. This is a handy little tool, especially when you don't have access to ASA.

I made sure that i was using the 513 emulation, the F7 and F8 keys work properly, just not the page up and page down keys..

Ideas?

Great tool. You can go to the manager of a call center and pull up the PBX and make changes on the fly. I like this a heck of a lot better than carrying the ASA cd's around and deleteing it off someones PC after you are done. Just drag Putty to the recycle bin.

need beta testing again. i taught putty to use serial port. :) now i'm using it to manage switches that don't have ethernet connectivity. :) now, i'm using it for two or three months and didn't experience any big problem, but still this code can't be considered stable without serious testing. so i'm looking for volunteers again. :)
note that there's no need for registry file any more, because putty can set the defaults on-the-fly.
and the site was moved around the corner: now it is

I can test it on Windows ME and Windows 95(does anyone use it except me?) but I need a pbx to login to in the Denver area. If someone could give me a login without permissions or a lab machine?

i think there are a 'few' on Lucent Blvd just south of Denver in Highlands Ranch. ;)

I tried to download putty.reg, but the link fails.
I have putty installed already, what do I need to do to make this work?
thanks!

bubbaphone,

there is no need for putty.reg any more. if you're running latest version of putty with my patches, try setting keyboard type to "at&t 513" and putty will ask you whether you want to set some defaults or not. try answering yes, it will duplicate the look-and-feel of avaya terminal emulator, the same putty.reg did but in more civilized way. :)

Thanks loads! It works great. My old Putty program was in my way, the new one from your site does the trick.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, as I'm not getting a login prompt. Should I try to connect to port 23, or leave my settings as is. Thanks in advance.

thicks70,

you need to enter your switch ip address and port, by default it is 5023, then hit 'open'.

Entered IP, port 5023, get a screen, but login prompt never comes up times out. I admin about seven different switches, at various release levels. My main is using CM2.2, anything differ I should do on this one? I can use putty on my R11 switches.

thicks70,

a-ha. seems that there is some problem with telnet implementation here. i've seen the same strange thing with cm2 csi and r11 g3r, but unfortunately i can't reproduce this problem often enough to debug it. anyway i think it's a bug and i'll try to solve it.

p.s. though my cm2.0.1 s8300 gives login prompt all okay. really strange.

dwalin - Thanks for the reply, I'll keep playing with it myself to see if I can find out anything as well. I was able to connect to a couple of my switches, R11 and below with no issues, so I think it's great tool. Oh by the way, I even connected to my Intuity LX with putty as well, so I'm thinking it can be used for Intuity's too. Let me know what you think.
