We are just installing a new hardware based VPN solution (Nokia using IPSEC)

How easy is it to get Avaya 4606 handsets working for home users via VPN over ADSL ?

Most staff will use XP's VPN client but I presume that the 4606 phones will need a hardware VPN in place so that the whole of the home LAN is connected by VPN back to the main LAN ? If so any recommendations for the router/modem to use to create the VPN IPSEC tunnel ?

Any other suggestions for doing it ?

Definately go with a hardware tunnel.

I always do this using Draytek 2600 routers. Most of our sites have a Watchguard Firebox at Head Office, just so we can get lots of tunnels. A Draytek at HO would work, but you'd only get 16 tunnels.

The Draytek also supports port based QoS, so you could give the port which you have the phone connected to priority over the PC port. Or if you had an IP phone with a built in switch, then you could connect the PC to the phone (not supported on you 4606).

ADSL is not the best solution for VoIP, although if it's one PC and one phone at each remote site, you should be fine. Just make sure you have a good uncontended connection at HO.

Thanks for the help.

We have just installed a 2Mb leased line at HO, so we should have more than sufficient bandwidth.
