4500 Serial problem

Ive got the wierdest problem with one of the routers on my rack. I have a cisco 4500 that just does strange things. I cant get the serial interfaces to come up with some cables!

I have a series of back to backs which I know work fine because they work on other links, however I plug one into the 4500 it wont work, plug another in it will work, then plug a third in an bingo they all stop working!! It doesnt matter wether I use the DCE or DTE end, problem is getting a combo of cables to work, I spend hours matching them up, turn it off and then bingo they dont work! so I have to swap around!
