We have an old 406 probably version 1 (running 2.1 77) with 6400 sets and 4600 IP sets on it. What can we successfully upgrade this system to? We would like the mobile twinning feature and dial in group conference capability.

A 406V1 can go to the latest 3.2 and that is it. After 3.2 comes 4.0 and then they dont support 4606, 4612 or 4624 phones anymore and the memory on the V1 is too small to handle it.

How can I tell if the loader needs to upgraded prior to upgrading the 406 switch?

I think you can check it thru the DTE port. I think there was a tech tip for checking it. All the info you need can be found at

From 4.0 and above there is no bin file for the 406 so it is impossible to go beyond 3.2, therefore it is useless to check the memory.
Dial in conference is a option available from version 1.nothing. If you have a VM pro then you can add PIN code checking.
Mobile twinning is not possible on a IP 406V1.
