4.2 not Fully supported on 406,412

Am I right in thinking that half the new features on 4.2 are not going to be supported on the old platforms? SOHO, 406 and 412!!!!
How many times can they do this to customers? we have UK customers who have already had to upgrade from DT hardware to keep up with new software, are we now to tell them that the 406 DS they bought a year ago will now need upgrading to a 500

Well, it's not really that bad, it's only 2 of the features plus 3 more on the SOE that's not supported.
Although I agree with you =)

But currently the are supporting 13 main units and one would guess that they would like to only support the IP500 if they could, and it will probably come to that eventually.

At least it's not as expensive to move to an IP500 from 406 DS that it was som DT to DS.

But on the other hand, who knows what will happen and what will become unsupported in the future.

The 406 and the SOE are out of sale
Why develope features for systems that are out of sale ?
The SOE is running out of memory with 4.2 so there is not much room anymore

I believe the problem relates to the Mobility features and is more about the PRI card rather than the memory. Even a 500 with Legacy PRI card is not going to work.

My point is more from the customers view than technical. Image a customer with an Index who upgrades to Ip office to retain the investment they have made in handsets only to be told 2 years down the line they need to upgrade again as IP office no longer supports DT sets. Another 2 years down the line we are telling them they need to upgrade their 406/412 as it will not support the new features. Would you buy Avaya again?

Have you ever worked with Siemens or others?
You can't upgrade them at all for over 6 or 7 years, you'll need to buy a complete upgrade kit which is more expenive then an empty IP500.

I have no issue with Avaya dropping features on older equipment, think of it from Avaya's perspective...

There are costs to develop new software. They give the software away for free. So it means that those who buy new hardware are subsidizing the development of features for old hardware.

Further, as we all know, sometimes there are "undocumented features". For how long should Avaya keep opening themselves up to having to solve problems on all hardware?

The alternative would be to PAY for each upgrade.

I vote to keep things as is.... develop new features and support it on systems which are three years or younger.

This also helps Avaya BP's sell new systems. "You want new features? Let's upgrade your base unit to a model 500, and you can keep all your 5410 phones from 6 years ago...

INDeX customers probably got most "screwed" when the shift for IPO came first from DT to DS and then IP4xx to IP500.
They also miss a lot of features as the IPO isn't a new INDeX.
Avaya probably would have been better of if the INDeX system would start migrating now instead of trying to get everyone over earlier.

In the end it will probably come to that only the IP500 is supported since it covers the range from small to medium customers.

And for us working with it it's easier to give support the fever components you can have.

It also come down to sales, who will buy a new phone if you can buy a 10 years old user phone instead.
Alcatel and Ericsson has always been fond of supporting old phones on their system, but don't know if that's better for either sales or supporting the system.

Panasonic are the best for compatibility.

You bought a KX-T 308 with 70XX phones 15 years ago and it still works. Just stick in a KX-TDA and you are up to date. Phones haven't changed much and they don;t break.

I have to agree with IPCruiser on the INDeX thing. INDeX features are missing. I've just managed to get a Call Back text on the phone with MWI that an INDeX customer wanted, but trying to replecate INDeX features on the IPO is very difficult.
