I have a Dual boot PC,with Win 98 Installed first.
In Win98 The 3C509 (on ISA) works fine and I can access the network.

However Every time I install Redhat It skips the network part and get a only the local adapter for the system. I tried adding it in Linuxconfig but it still could not find it.

I have tried both 6.2 and 7.0 and still did not work.

I remmeber it worked before. (Last time I installed Redhat ). The only thing changed is
1. I fdisk and installed Win98 first (2G partition, leaving 4G for Linux)
2. My LAN cable used to be a cross-over, now it is connected to hub (not with the cross over cable of course).

I have also tried to turn on and off PnP and also changed the card to another slot, still no luck.

I am getting getting tired of trying different configs and reinstalling, so it anyone knows what is going on and can help. I would greatly appriciate it.

Thanks

Maybe kudzu can find it? Type kudzu at the command prompt and see if that finds and installs it.

If not, maybe this doc will help?

Hi,

Have a simmilar problem...trying to load Intel Pro 100 network card. If I can ping the loopback address, does that meen that the NIC is loaded correctly?

I typed Kudzu, and it thought for a while, then went back to the prompt with no error...What does that mean?

Regards,

Julian

Type 'lsmod' and see if the drivers are loaded.

If kudzu doesn't return anything, it didn't find any new hardware to install.

What happens when you do....

ifconfig eth0 up

Hi,

I removed all interfaces...and add an eth0 one with a static Ip address. I activated it and went to the console and typed "ifconfig eth0 up" and it said "unknown interface - no such device"!

I assume that that means that the NIC is not properly loaded?

Amybe I need to download an install Intel drivers? Could you provide me with a bit more feedback...

Much appreciated,

Regards,

Julian

Did 'lsmod' show the drivers? I have a 3C905 NIC and I see the driver is loaded with this command. Mine is called 3c59x.

Look at the /proc/pci file (assuming the NIC is a PCI device) and see if you see it there.

fluid11, keep in mind that if the NIC card drivers are compiled into the kernel then an lsmod will not show the drivers. The fact that Julian received an "unknown interface..." error when trying an ifconfig isn't good news. Try a search on google for "3C905" and look at the available information. Because ifconfig doesn't work that means you do NOT have a proper driver setup for the card. You will have to get a driver, recompile the kernel, compile a new driver as a module, etc, something to get a new, different, or better driver for your card.

In another post, julian said that he changed eth0 to Eth1 for whatever reason --> thread619-329153 I don't know if he was able to bring interface Eth1 up or not yet.

The drivers might not show in the 'lsmod' output, but what about the /proc/pci file? /proc/pci should show the NIC. In my experience, 3com NIC drivers have always shown in lsmod, but I understand that drivers can be installed more than one way.

Back again,

Okay I tried the kudzu and lsmod, no avail.

I changed the card to 3C905 and reinstalled, still problems.

I changed the motherboard and tried the 3C509 and 3C905 still it does not prompt me for the network Ip etc on install.

However, the PnP BIOS does detect the card.

because I see it on boot up.

Could it be a BIOS problem???

schu, are you julianf also?

Did you check the /proc/pci and the /proc/interrupts files to see if the card is there? Whats in /etc/modules.conf? Try adding this line to /etc/modules.conf...

alias eth0 3c59x

...and then run 'modprobe eth0'

Let us know if this works.

Hi Guys,

Sorry, been posting on 2 threads...In actual fact, my NIC is an Intel pro 100...not a 3com. I assume from the responses I have read that it will be best to get the drivers and recompile the Kernel with it...(However the heck you do that!) ;-)

I will get the drivers so long...

Thanx,
Julian

If your using an Intel Pro 100 card, this link may help...

Well, that is definitely the problem then. In my experience, using the 3Com drivers for an Intel Pro 100 card isn't known to work. That was sarcastic. :) Anyway, cat /proc/pci like fluid mentioned would be a good way to determine what kind of card you have...or at least what Linux detected your card to be. Making sure you have the right driver aliased to eth0 in modules.conf is also a good thing. However, this should all take care of itself after you recompile the kernel with the correct driver compiled into the kernel or as a module. Explaining how exactly to recompile the kernel in a message post doesn't seem feasible to me with google.com so readily available. You should find all the information you need.

J Blaze, I noticed that you said this at the bottom of more than one post. Why not just start a new thread? I doubt that you have the same problem as the one above. Start a new post and tell us about the problem.
