I'm trying to use MRTG to graph the traffic on my 3924. it worked when the pc running MRTG was in the same building (behind a firewall that was plugged into the 3924). Now that they are in separate physical locations connected by the internet, I cannot get MRTG to read the switch. All the IP stuff is correct. I can get to the management interface from the PC.

Check your firewall settings to make sure that it actually lets the SNMP traffic through. To minimize the size of that hole in your firewall I suggest, if possible, to only allow snmp traffic between your MRTG station and the devices you wish to monitor.
The monitoring console web tool is only transferring http data between the device and your MRTG station.
