301 keyboard error

Setting: Corporate cast-off computer is being used by underprivileged neighbor's kids. Kids have a simple set-up; no printer, no networking, just Window's 98 and Office '97. They have tried to load games from free CD Roms and they tried to load three different AOL CDs without knowing what they were.

Problem: Computer will not boot past Window's splash screen. At the top of the IBM screen where I have the option of entering setup and after I enter setup it references a 301 Keyboard Error.

I cannot get into safe mode using F8 during boot. I have the Windows 98 cd, but I cannot find a place in the set-up to instruct the computer to boot up on the CD. I did not create a boot disk. There is no fear of overwriting files saved to the computer, but I'm not sure I have the necessary device drivers as I am not sure what drivers were being used.

What can I do to get this computer working again?

this link will enable you to make a boot disk that you might use for windows . If you think the BIOS setup is screwed up take the battery out of the mother board leave it out for a couple of min reinstall and boot , you will get a checksum error and directions on how to get to the BIOS setup .reset the default settings and while you are there check your boot Piroty A-C or whatever Hope This Helps Solve Your Problem

Usually from the keyboard being bad, but can be the keyboard port on the M/B.
Are the lites on the keyboard flickering during POST? Or at power on?
If they flicker at power on then the kbd is getting power, if they flicker at POST the kbd is being queried, and the failure is of response from the kbd. Ed Fair

The keyboard probably just needs to be replaced. That error usually comes up when a key is stuck or if the keyboard isn't working. -Brad
