Hi I have recently inherited an access 2000 database, however this db is actually 3 databases; one has the tables/data the other forms that are linked to the db with the tables/data and a third db that contains the switchboard. This db is used over a network.

What I would like to know is why this has been done this way?
and how is this done?

any pointers to tuts or other resource material much appreciated.

Congratulations Bob,

The traditional reason for splitting a db is to put the data (back-end)
on the server and the forms/reports (front-end) on the clients machines.
This way the overhead of transporting all of those forms/reports over
the network is alleviated.

An added benefit is that "most users" won't see (or know) where the
real data is, making it a much safer environment.

Why somebody would also split the switchboard into another database
mystifies me. It is very easy to "link" to tables in the back-end,
and to the software this is transparent. However, when you divorce
yourself from the forms/reports it is a LOT MORE WORK to run forms
in a different database.

Maybe someone just had a terrific sense of humor, or maybe they just
wanted to build something "complex".

You can open a new blank access database. Then import the switchboard,
tables, forms/reports/queries from the three different databases. Once
you get it all back together again you can use the native Access utility
to split the database and resume life normally.

But, bear in mind that there is probably a lot of extraneous code in
the switchboard database to "referee" the flow of operations.

just some thoughts,
Wayne
