On start up and on shut down the computer "checks" the 3 1/2 floppy several times making that rrrrrrrrr noise.

IS there a way to stop it from doing this?

I have set the BIOS to have the floppy NOT listed in the three choices for boot. But the computer seems to check the floppy anyways.

Any ideas?

The accesing the floppy stopped on shutdown, but it still does it on start up.

It happens almost at the end of the start up "run".

startup "run"? When exactly does it occur? During Boot Sequence? Just before the Windows Logo appears? At the logon screen (if you have one)? After Logon?

If you're using Windows 98 (or ME i think), and the answer to the last question is "just after logon", then it may have something to do with explorer....I think this is the fix:

- Open My Computer
- Put a Floppy in the Drive
- Go into A:
- Close the Window
- Remove Floppy.

Try it and see. If not there are 2 other things to try:

- Put a Floppy in the drive before you turn the PC on - when it reads the A: Drive and actually finds a Disk, it may say something.
- If using 98/ME, go to Control Panel -> System Properties -> Performance Tab -> "File System" -> Floppy Disk Tab -> Untick "Search for new floppy disk drives each time your computer starts".

Ok Dragon, I have WinXP Pro, sorry I didn't mention it.

The accesing the floppy occurs almost at the end of the start up "run". Just after every icon is on the desktop and the red led indicating HDD activity stops.

In real time, lets say the start up takes 20sec total, the accesing of the floppy happens about 17sec.

I will try your suggestion to see if there is some "pending" unresolved command still hanging.

Thanks.
