Currently have 1 domain controller setup with ip of 172.17.36.100 and this in turn is used on the clients for the DNS to connect to the domain.

I have another domain controller setup with the IP 172.17.36.27 if I use this as the second DNS on the clients will this, if the main domain controller is taken offline, be used as the DNS and internet etc will be routed though this. (I have DFS setup too)

Is there anything else I should check for this?

Thanks
Simon

Is DNS setup as Active Directory Integrated? If not, do so.

If you have selected Enable Forwarders on the the 2nd DNS server (as should be on the 1st) and listed the IP's of your ISP, then yes, if the 1st DNS server is unavailable, clients that know of the 2nd DNS server will continue to resolve DNS for your Domain and the Internet.

AD integration done

So I simply need to add the both the DNS on the clients and job done!

Thanks

correct. make certain that both dns servers are forwarding enabled and there are valid ip address for the DNS servers of your ISP.
