Howdy,

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and upgrading my Win95 system to Win 2000. I'm looking for three things:

1. Any online resources you know of that discuss the pros and cons of upgrading

2. Your thoughts about whether to upgrade (overwrite) or do a clean install of Win 2000?

3. If you're interested, your ideas of possible problem areas. Are there certain softwares that don't work on Win2000 and so on? One big concerns for me are games - my son is an avid gamer. Do DirectX and all of that stuff work well on Win 2000?

Thanks,
Steve

That's kind of a big step. The first thing I would do is check if w2k will work with your hardware. I had a computer with w98, and I couldn't upgrade to w2k! (I'll never by an HP again!)

Also, Windows XP is coming out around october, so you might wanna wait a few months for that. And if you can afford it, I would buy a whole new computer when XP comes out. That's what I'm doing. ~Javrix

If you gave an infinate number of rednecks, an infinate number of shotguns to shoot at an infinate number of street signs, they would eventually write Romeo and Juliet in braille.

Make sure that you really want to do this. You may not run into problems if your system HW is new. If you had 95 on it then this is probably not the case. (strike one !) Check HCL.

The benefits of NTFS are lost to you. (strike two !!)

If you decide to upgrade you may get away with it. But you lose the benefit of a nice clean registry... with any OS upgrade to reg gets ever-so much more cluttered. Nothing is ever really deleted from registry (except manually). And if you choose to do a clean install, you will have to reload all your software. (strike three !!!)

Javrix suggestion is probably best... wait & buy a new system when funds available. Best of luck -md
