2950 cisco switch port problem

I am having a problem with a 2k w/sbox and the switch. If I use any port on the switch I cannot get any traffic to move, even ping does not work. Now if I connect a hub before the switch all works well on any port. I have a laptop that works fine on any of the ports. I cant find any setting that would affect this situation. As I am a novice with Cisco kit I am unable to resolve the problem.
I use the virtual manager to configure the switch as the CLI I find is difficult to use. I have checked out the ARP table whereby there are only 2 entries recorded but there are 5 devices connnected. I thought the ARP recorded all the mac addresses connected to the switch.I have cleared the Arp Table and started again but this has had no effect. I am at a loss to fix this, can anybody help me....

Hey, here's a goofy question but it may help us get to the answer faster, does the link light come on when you plug in, and if so, does it every go to green or stay amber?

Hi navage thanks for repyling to my question. Yes the link goes green. I am in the process of tring to establish also if snmp is enabled does this cause the problem to occur.

The arp table is dynamic and short lived. I've seen a 48 port switch before with only 5 to 10 arp entries, so that's not always reliable.

Is the switch part of your network or just a stand alone device? Have you tried other 2K devices to make sure it's not just in the 2K's IP settings? Default gateway for the workstations' IP settings are correct? What model switch is it?

Tell you what, if you want to post the config file here (delete the IP address) then we can see if there's settings that would prohibit the connections.

To get the config file from the CLI just telnet into the switch using the same IP address you use for the Virtual Manager. When the Switch> comes up type in "enable" and then enter the password. When you see Switch# type in "show run" the copy all the output over to notepad using the regular cut and paste.

This'll help figure out what's going on. Other than MAC filtering I can't think of what would prohibit one device from connecting, Especially if your port is turning Green.

This may sound silly but did you check that the port speed on the switch is not set to 100mbps/full duplex and the NIC at 10mbps/half duplex.This will cause the two devices to show a link light but not pass data.It is important that the NIC matches the speed and duplex of the switch(auto/auto,100/full or 10/half)

The command to view the cam table(MAC Address Table)on a Cisco IOS switch is:sh mac-address-table.This should show all the MAC's that the switch has seen within the cam aging time.The default is 300 sec.If you want to check the MAC address of a device in a particular port the command is:sh mac-address-table dyn int faS/P(were S=slot and P=port).

from your config I would expect you to have problems with DHCP enabled devices on ports 0/1 to 0/16, whilst the PC is requesting an address the switch port is still blocking and the PC gives up before the port changes to forwarding. if this is your problem set spanning-tree portfast as reqd - but dont set on connections to other network devices.
