I have a Cisco 2610 router in a local county complex that houses 2 different agencies. I have separated their networks by using Vlans.

I use the single ethernet interface with one sub-interface for my router connection to the trunk port of the switch. I am using dot1q 2 encapsulation on the subinterface for my Vlan. I am using RIP as the routing protocol.

This config has been working for the past month. Now the router will not route any packets. While telnetted into the router, I can ping every device on each subnet. From every device, I can ping the router interface that is on that subnet. I CANNOT ping the opposite router interface, nor any device on the opposite subnet.

I have tried erasing the starting-config and reloading my saved one via TFTP. I have also re-loaded my IOS version (thinking something could have become corrupted) Neither one worked. I have erased the starting-config and reloaded and re-wrote the running config from scratch... still the same thing.

Has anyone else seen this happen? could it possibly be a hardware malfunction? Nothing on the network has been changed in any way. It just stopped routing =(

Thank you,
Matt

Please post your configuration. I see in your post that your claiming that your running sub interfaces on your 2610's ethernet port. You need to have a fast ethernet port to be able to sub interface IP. You can sub interface IPX on ethernet, but your post doesn't mention IPX, so....

Unless you have a brand spanking new 2610 that got a fast ethernet port and it's just labled "ethernet". Anyway, post your config if you can...I'd like to take a look if you don't mind.

I can see your concearn about the Fast Ethernet Interface... I too thought the same thing. However, please keep in mind that this configuration has been working for weeks. It all of a sudden quit routing.

Thanks,
Matt

I'm going to create this in my lab...I still don't think this config is 100%. I want to see this. I'll get back to you today.

There is a version of 12.2 that will do dot1q over a 10mb Ethernet port. If you have a lot of traffic the link might slow down, but for a small network it should be fine. You should also do 2 subinterfaces, one for each vlan. This way one of the networks is not on VLan 1, the management VLan.
Also, s0/0 is admin down. Is it supposed to be??? Are you trying to route between subnets, or to the internet?? There is also no IP on s0/0. If you are just routing between subnets, then why not just make it all one big network?

Ok, after further checking..I have discovered that you can subinterface ethernet ports on new models of 2600's. This has nothing to do with IOS, but infact a chipset upgrade to the ethernet interface. Now I also found out that Cisco does not support using sub-interfacing ethernet for IP due to instability issues. Which could or could not be the very issue that your having Sabap. I don't know. My 2600's are not of the newer versions, so I could not duplicate this problem in my lab. I wish I had something else for you but I don't. I would suggest that if you have a Smartnet contract, that you use it and call TAC for support. Thanks for letting me look at this.

Thank you for your help.. to answer Degg's question. There are 2 Different organizations in the same building. They are also sharing a 3com NBX 100 Voice over IP Phone system. One of the organizations is a medical company. They want their DATA on a different network to insure security. However they wan to be able to use the nework utilities and features of the 3com box... witch is on the other subnet. What you did not see in my config were the Access-lists I had allowing them only the ability to access the NBX host. That is why they cannot be on the same network and why I chose a V-lan instead of more costly equipment.

And to answer your other question about the Serial interface... NO I am not using it. and this router has no connectivity to the internet... this router is used for internal routing only.

Thank you,
Matt
