Hello Folks,

I am in a debate over whether to 'UPGRADE' our NT Server to 2003 server or should I clean off the hard drive and just do a fresh install of 2003? Are there any benefits to a clean install versus the upgrade?

Thanks,

Smitty

it depends on the domain you have now, whether you want to make a fresh start...
if you have a lot of users/PCs and shared files etc... then you'll have a lot of downtime for users if you start fresh.

You'll need to be certain your server can handle 2003 too..

Give us some details on your existing domain and we might be able to give you advice on your exact situation...

If your current NT server is your Domain Controller, then here is what we did.

1) We promoted another NT server to be our Primary Domain Controller.

2) On the NT server we were upgrading, we did a fresh install of NT 4.0 server, then promoted it back to be the PDC. From there, we did the upgrade to Windows 2003.

This was a very smooth process for us at least.

I would always recommend new install over upgrade ANY day.

A clean install is more secure than an upgrade as an upgrade will take some registry settings etc from NT4.
