i've installed 2003 server, ran dc promo and then in active directory users and computers I have added my xp machine in there.
I then went to my xp machine and tried to add the xp machine to the domain and got the error

a domain controller for the.matrix could not be contacted.

there is no firewall software and I can ping/share files/remote admin both machines.

any help would be appriciated, and feel free to add me to msn if you'd like
lllllllllliiiiillllllllll@hotmail.com

thanks.

Did you add a new user to the desktop to log on to AD with the DOMAIN name?

I didn't do that I don't think. All that I did was add my xp machine to the computers ou in active directory, if you'd like to give me instructions on how to do that that would be good. or even add me to your msn.

I have to do it this week, so that was from memory. This client upgraded to W2K3 Server with a Domain (for 5 users) and now needs XP Pro on her laptop to connect.

I ran thru it last week, so that was from memory.

1) You should see the local computer on the server immediately.
2)Log on to the local computer (as an Admin) and create a new user account (using the domain).
3) Log off the local machine
4) Create the account on the server
5) Log on to that account on the local machine

I might leave the old local account for her to use at home.

I've installed W2K3 Server, but used Workgroup for my home, so I'm not having a problem. I might install XP Pro, and upgrade to a Domain Controller, but I'm not in a hurry, as I don't need it right now, and would do it only to diagnose problems with the client.

I've managed to resolve the issue. I could ping the.matrix from my 2k3 server but not from the xp machine. I added the 2k3's ip address as the first dns server of the xp machine.
I then re tryed adding the xp machine to the.matrix domain and it worked.
woooooo, thanks for your assistance.
