After migrating to 2003 I can see the network on the other side of my trust but can't access anything. Can't map a drive. I can ping by name and IP. The machine on the other end of the trust is NT 4.

I get an error: "\\machinename is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Yes, I setup my trust per that article. However, I put the netbios name of the nt 4 machine into the 2003 box and it chokes saying "Cannot continue". I did have the trust setup at one point but deleted it due to an access denied error message. Cannot reestablish the trust.

Okay, thanks for all of the info so far. No my dns is not working and I'm at the point where I would like to just rebuild the box. It's my new 2003 PDC was upgraded from a clean NT4 install. I'm not happy with the drive partitions etc... What do I need to do to take it offline and rebuild. I'm running DNS, DHCP. Will the 2003 bdc take care of logins, etc when I take the pdc offline to rebuild. Can I put the new PDC back online gracefully after the rebuild??

What are the conscequences of doing this??? etc...
All input is appreciated.

There are some FAQ's about this, and I would look there. You may want to move the FSMO roles to the second DC (backup) before rebuilding. Also, do you have DNS/DHCP running on your second server? If not, I would start there.

When I attempt to connect to the bdc to change FSMO's it gives me an error saying "the following domain controller could not be contacted: name of controller. Access is denied.

Okay, I have since rebuilt this server (PDC) Win 2003 server. I ran dcpromote, setup dns, wins and dhcp.

My question is why don't I see any of my users or computers in users and computers?? I can see all in network neighborhood...

Is it truly a PDC and how can I tell. I still see this same computer name in the bdc? I'm pretty confused at this point??

How do I rejoin the dc to the domain after rebuilding?? Are there files that need to be cleaned up. I just keep getting the error message "user already exists" and I assume that it is saying that the computer already exists in the domain. Should I delete it from the domain??

I'm up and running DNS, DHCP, WINS, etc... I still can't create the trust. I can see all machines on both sides. Can add the trust on the nt4 domain but not on the 2003 domain. Just tells me "cannot continue"... In the event viewer on the nt 4 side I see event id 5721. I don't see anything in the 2003 event viewer.

Ran Nltest from the nt4 side and get ERROR_NO_SUCH_DOMAIN. I also get an error from the 2003 server side and get ERROR_NO_SAM_AVAILABLE.

What Domain Functional Level do you have your domain set to?

Okay, after reading it a few times I woke up. The 2003 server is a DC and the NT4 is a PDC.

Thanks
