Hi all! I have been having some issues/warnings in DNS at bootup and only bootup on my 2003 DC. If I point the primary DNS server to itself, I will get warnings/errors in the logs...

I read somewhere that this is becuase AD is looking for DNS and the DNS service hasn't started on the local machine yet and to point the primary DNS to another server and the alternate to itself.

If I do this, the warnings go away but I thought in 2003, the primary was supposed to be itself.

Best practice is to have at least two DNS entries for your DCs. The first should point to another DNS server, and the secondary should point to itself.

the above is not the case with the PDC emulator...PDCe should face himself and himself only for DNS, and all other replica DCs should point to teh PDCe as preferred and themselves as alternates...I wrote a FAQ on this too...

Thanks for the reply...Good stuff!

Question...In the FAQ, you mention to set the TCP/IP properties as:

DNS server address is listed
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes is marked (radio button)
Append the parent suffix of the primary DNS suffix is checked (checkbox)
Register this connections addresses in DNS is checked (checkbox)
Everything else should be blank
Ensure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled and not set to default (mainly for Win2003)

So you're saying to leave the "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration" and the "DNS suffix for registration" blank/empty? We just migrated to 2003 from 2000 and in 2000, the previous network admin had that last option in the DNS properties checked and had our domain.com name in the DNS suffix box.

Are you saying to remove that?

Thanks for your help!

yea your previous admin was wrong

use this connections suffix in dns registration says to use the suffix filled in on the blank line to make a STANDALONE machine computer.domain.com instead of just computer.
your full copmputername is already computer.domain.com, as any domain member has this suffix appended just by being joined....so in that, the setting is unneeded.....the settings outlined are teh best to use if in an AD domain

so yes, you should remove that

what it does is makes your machine computer.domain.com.domain.com instead of just computer.domain.com basically
