Help,

At the moment I have a small Win2000Pro network at work, and the time has come for some serious hardware upgrading.

I am considering moving on to XP Pro at the same time, but have seen so many argument for and against, that I am pretty lost.

I like to keep reasonably current with OSs, and the next easy opertunity for an upgrade after this will be a few years down the line.

Reading between the lines XP is a "cosmetic" job on 2000, with little else of real benefit?

I ask here, rather in the XP forum as I assume you, as I have a leaning towards 2000.

You thoughts would be much appreciated.

I went through a similar decision making time about a year ago. I was reluctant to move from Win2K as it was rock solid.

In the end I installed WinXP Pro and not regretted it. Yes, there is all the pretty pretty nonsense, but that can easily be disabled. XP is a step up from Win2K, and there are so many refinements Win2K can seem plain clumsy. Networking is made easy, as is USB2 support. Multi-language support is good too though that might not be an issue for you.

If you are moving to WinXP, I strongly recommend installing on to a clean partition, not an upgrade from Win2K.

Cheers for that.

This will be a clean install. Is there anything that I should be watching out for changing from 2000 to XP?

I had some grief going from 98 to 2000, mainly from unsupported hardware & software - but I assume that this will not be an issue moving from 2000 to XP?

Thanks.

ISTR being connected to the internet while you're installing will help when locating drivers, but ideally you need to be behind a firewall/router.

Use something like Belarc Advisor to record all your hardware components/specs and software details before you start.

Move up to XP SP2 ASAP for the enhanced security.

And of course, make sure you have backed up any licence numbers, data, e-mails, address books, settings/customisations, fonts, favourites, passwords, &c. before you start. XP's Backup Wizard is usful in this respect!
