2000 series sets vs 3900 series sets

Has anyone out there written a document or memo offering some kind of compelling argument why to stop installing 2000 series phones and utilize the new 3900 series phones?

While the concept makes perfect sense to everyone in this forum the management I deal with actually enjoys the economical price of the refurbished 2616 sets and sees no reason to start deploying 3900 series phones? It seems to be an uphill battle to convince upper management to switchover to the newer phones. I welcome anyone's thoughts as I hope to compose a tactful e-mail about this subject.

If I could convince my company to switch back to the 2616 phones, I would love it. I personnaly use a 2616 because I like having all the extra buttons for testing lines. I see know advantage to having 3900 phones as we don't use any features that would require them. It's just like upgrading your switch, unless there is a feature that you must have, why upgrade.

Our main reason for upgrading to the 39xx series phones is not having to deal with key caps anymore. When we need to change a button on a phone or add a feature it just shows up for the user. This is especially nice at our remote sites. This saves so much time and makes MAC work so much easier. We program the TNs and the user plugs the phone in.

The previous post said he has more buttons for line testing I don't quite get that as there are 12 buttons (use the shift key) to program different lines, DNs, and features on a 3904. Personally I love the directories to. I use the redial directory all the time. Another time saver.

The only reason I have seen for not using the 3900 series phones is the users that think they are too complicated. We usually give them a 3902 before we go back to the 2000 series.

We still use 2616s in our Call Center just because they are cheap and we don't change button programming on them.

In my opinion, the entire 39XX series of sets is a waste.

There is only one reason to consider them - the full duplex speaker phone adapater on the 3904

Otherwise, it is a lousy line of phones.

I'm coming from a different perspective, as I only began using Meridian systems during the 39XX reign, and only have one 2008 phone in the whole enterprise. The bulk are 3900's with a few 1140E's, 2110's, and some 500's. I like the 3900 phones, especially because paper labels and keycaps are entirely done away with (but use the DBA add on module, not the KBA). The built-in directories and on-set programming are decent features too. I get positive feedback from users of these phones; they think they are "fancy" high tech devices. The base on the 3902 model is ridiculously difficult to remove, so be warned. The 3903 and 3904 can be had new for under $200 on the grey market, and I think they're a pretty decent phoneset for a professional who needs multiple lines, etc.

Whether that's a good reason to wholesale stop installing the 2000 series, I don't know. The keycap issue in itself, as someone above mentioned, is probably the most compelling reason. User needs that other line, or other feature, just move the buttons around in software and the proper label automatically appears.

Just out of curiousity Gene, what is your beef with the series?

we are in the process of changing all our 2000 series to 3904's... two reasons, labels and they match the ip sets. people complain if someone else has an ip and there new set is an old style 2616.. surprised to here anyone say they didn't like the 3000... with 600 in service i've had 1 go bad in a year... there is not a reason to make a change from the tech side..

The call log is a good selling point to upper management though, getting back to the original question. This gives you the ability to review numbers that have called or been called by that phone.


I can't imagine anyone preferring the 2000 over the 3000 series though, just the time alone you save with key caps is worth my money haha

The 3900 series are nice phones. I can't deny that. But they suck as a test phone. I don't have any here, so I can't verify, but I know that there are things you can do with the old 2616's that you can't do with a 3900 series. It could be trunk access or maybe MIK/MCK to turn on and off the voicemail light. I had them at one of my old sites and finally traded back to a 2616 for the switch room phone.

I don't know about trunk access, but MIK/MCK works on them.
