2000 Domain same as Internet Domain

I know you can add some kind of Alias(Cname) but I am not sure exactly how to do this. I right click on the server name and went to new Alias, but it will not let me put in the ip address of the real website, so they can type it in and go to it. Any suggestions?

From my faq...

In DNS Manager, expand the server and go into forward lookup zones and select your domain.
Right click on the domain and select 'new alias'. In the Alias Name type www. In the "Fully qualified name for target host" type the FQND of the ISPs hosting server (ie. webhost.force9.net).

Find out the FQDN of the IP address you have. (you can use a rDNS or ask your ISP). The reason for this is because IPs addresses of websites aren't always static.

I did as you said and went to the forward zone and right clicked then new, Alias, and typed

http://www as

the Alias name and on the FQDN line I put in ns1. blah.com hit ok then apply. I restarted the DNS Service and it does not work. Am I missing something? When they type

http://www.blah.com

it just goes to their local server instead of outside to the real world.

What are you trying to do? where is the DNS? internal? external?

Ok here is what I am trying to do. On site 2000 Server DC, running DNS. Local domain is blah.com, the real website domain is

http://www.blah.com.

When users on this local subnet (internally) open up web browser and type

http://www.blah.com

they get directed to the local server onsite. When, they need to go outside of their network to the real website, which is hosted by another company.

Create on your internal DNS server in forward lookup zone new A (Host) record (New Host...) for

http://www.blah.com

pointing to external website IP address. This will direct your local users to external website.
Unfortunatelly you cannot have internal website with the same DNS name

http://www.blah.com.
