Hi:
Cute subject, very frustrating problem.
Background:
THIS IS A FRESH INSTALL OF WINDOWS 2000 Advanced Server
Client gave me a Dell Precision 530 to convert to a server. The original hardware was:
Dual Xeon Processors
1GB Ram
Qty 3 162GB SCSI Hard Drives (Fujitsu)
LSI Logic ultra320 SCSI Adapter
IDE DVD Drive
IDE CDRW Drive
Machine is now running windows 2000 advanced server.
Setting this machine up was a bit of a challenge. My first problem was finding a used RAID 5 controller card. The brand new ones were selling for $400 and up. So I went to my trusty local used parts store where I picked up a compaq smart 532 scsi ultra162 array controler. It didn't work. Turns out that card requires a compaq motherboard. Back to the store I went and exchanged it for a Dell Perc Ultra2 RAID Controller. Finally I could beging creating my RAID 5 array and installing windows.
I set the system up with a 15GB C: drive partition and the remaining 250GB or so was assigned to the D: drive partition.
Installation went great...didn't need WINS and I haven't configured DNS yet. I set the server up as an application server with Terminal Services. Configured Active Directory just fine and all is well.
My experience has its limitations. I've installed roughly 10 instances of Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server from scratch and a few more pre-installed from Dell.
Here's my new problem which I've never encountered before. Whenever I try to launch anything from Administrative Tools, it takes 20 seconds or more for the application to display. Let's take "Active Directory Users and Computers" for example. I select it, or double click on it from the desktop shortcut. Nothing happens. You have to wait 20 seconds and then the window opens. None of the other installed applications seem to have this problem.
Has anyone had specific experience with this problem before?
