my BIOS recognized the new hard drive as 8.4 GB, but the win2K recognized it as 20 GB (actuali it show 18 GB)correctly. will it be a problem in the future? thanks

A bios flash is in order...go to the motherboard mfr.'s site (after you figure out who that is) and "bone up" on how to do it. For sure, understand and complete the instructions on backing it up BEFORE you try it.

I second that!

Flashing the BIOS can be the quickest way to kill a computer, so make sure you read and understand all the instructions.

To get your board to recognise the new disk, this is a necessary procedure, however.

If in any doubt, post questions here on T-T - this is the best site on the 'net for technical advice, IMO.

Thanks. But i have already downloaded the latest BIOS from the manufacturer. Here my details :

Compaq Prosignia 200
P05 BIOS, date 04/19/2002
Pentium II 300
Compaq Intel 440FX Motherboard LPX Form Factor
160 MB EDO RAM
Riva TNT2 16MB PCI VGA
Creative Vibra 128 PCI sound card
Seagate ST320011A 20GB (showed 18GB in W2K)

Could it be a damage from the BIOS chip? or CMOS battery is already low? Thanks

If you've installed win2k on it as an 18.4GB drive, you'll probably be ok as long as you run win2k (win2k ignores bios settings anyway - uses its own - though I've never put win2k on a large drive where bios couldn't see its whole size, so don't know if what you're seeing is normal for win2k in this situation, or bios really can see whole drive, but is reporting size wrong). Don't understand why bios only seeing 8.4GB - bios date of April this year means it should be ok to recognise larger disks (did the site give any description of what bios update(s) were for?). It won't be battery (presuming you've got bios set to auto detect, its not displaying saved settings).
PS. One thing you could try (don't know how useful) - boot from a win98 floppy & use fdisk to display partition details (it should give a size for the non-dos partition if you're using ntfs). Because fdisk shouldn't be able to see more than the bios.

I have a 20Gb Hard Drive and my BIOS reports it as a 4GB Hard drive
and I have found out that my BIOS Wont suport anything bigger But I have used my hard drive fine the only problem that I have is that I can't Repartition it using PartitionMagic So I can only use it as one big drive unless I put it in another computer that suports 20Gb and repartition it that why

Hope this helps ________________________________________

i contact the compaq technician, but they only said that they dont support third party hard drives. damn!!!

Dwilko:

Have you checked for updated bios?

Sapibobo:

Compaq's 3rd-party comment is a propietary copout...I'd run thru the compaq newsgroups...some are on compaq's (hp's?) site. If you utilize a newsreader for ng's...there's another at att.sys.pc-clone.compaq on my ISP's news server. The latter is more likely to give you "straight skinny".
Lots of misinformation is given by those companies who are so strict on NOT SUPPORTING anything other than what they desire. The users sort out the...well...the kernel from the chaff.

Reaffirms my decision to hand-select and put together systems...which brings along its own set of problems...but I'll take them.

You might check out EZ-DRIVE. I had a similar problem when I replaced the HDD with a 20GB one some time ago. I knew that WD had supplied a version of EZ-DRIVE that worked only with WD drives, so I went looking on the internet and located a universal version of EZ-DRIVE and purchased it - it was only !5 to 20 dollars, as I remember. I downloaded it and minutes later I was able to use the full disk and partition it in the way I wanted. That system only uses Win98SE.

Hope this helps.

Programs that can do this include Micro House International's Ez-Drive or EZ-Copy ($20 or $15 via download from http:/ / house.com, 800/ 92~8299, 303/443-3388) Many disk vendors, including Maxtor, Western Digital, and Toshiba include a program like this

Hope this helps you.
