There are 2 Xp home machines, a & B(srry didnt see forum for it). Trying to network them theu Linksys router for first time to share files & share printer
-Workgroups are both Mshome on machine A & B
-Both C:\ drives are shared on A & B
-When I try to navigate to My Network places, says I dont have permission on machine B but not A, when I get to the MShome part
-Went to Admin tools, Component Services, browse to My Computer on both A & B to properties, COM securitty and edited "Access permissions" & "launch & activate permissions". Addded lesser restrictions to ful control
-I still cant get the 2 machines to see each other. What am I doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

what about firewalls, did you turn them off or set them up for sharing files

Tried the firewall options, since both machines have srvice pack 2 installed. They are both off. Stupid question. Where is the option for file/ printer sharing?

Do both of the ports that your PC's are connected to on the Linksys router get a LINK light? If they don't, try different RJ45 cables. If you are not seeing the LINK led come on, stop right there and troubleshoot why. Usually a straight thru cable will work; but you could try a crossover if you have a couple.

When you run IPCONFIG /ALL from a Dos (cmd) window, do both machines have an IP address in the same subnet, using the same Netmask, and same Gateway? They should.

You did not say, but I'm hoping your Linksys router is also a DHCP server and that it is serving up IP addresses to your two PC's in the same subnet. Check the setting on each XP machine to make sure they are set up for DHCP.

If each PC has a unique IP address in the same subnet, can you PING the PC's? If you cannot you definately do not have your networking setup correctly.

If you manually assign an IP address and Netmask to each PC, then connect them NIC to NIC using a crossover cable, can you PING both PC's? One from the other?

Address: 192.168.0.1 Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Address: 192.168.0.2 Netmask: 255.255.255.0

Bring up the networking Icon in the Control Panel, and go thru the steps of telling both PC's that you want to share drives or directories with other on your subnet.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The problem seeemed to be the Netbios setting. Thanks to all. It is working perfectly!
