2 Win98 machines & DSL

I was trying to help a friend of mine last night and I'm wondering about the advice he received earlier. He was told that he could hook up his two machines and his DSL modem to a network switch and everything would work great. BUT, his provider uses DHCP to assign IP addresses, and if he uses DHCP on his computers he gets public addresses and his two computers can't see each other. If he uses 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses his computers can see each other but he can't get on the internet--the gateway address isn't accessible. I think someone gave him some bad information. I told him he could gat a home firewall/gateway but he doesn't want to spend any more money if he doesn't have to. Anybody know if it's possible to use a network switch & a DSL modem without something doing NATing?

As far as I know, the only way to do such a thing is to purchase a little router that does DHCP and NAT. I have the Linksys BEFSR41 router. It receives an IP address from my cable modem and then gives out IP address' in whatever IP range I want it to. It says that it will support up to 254 users, but I don't know if I would push it that much. I subscribe to Time Warner's high speed cable modem connection. I know that if I want another IP address, it’s like an extra 12 bucks a month, but the linksys is much better. You can enable file sharing on the local computers and see both machines. Don’t worry, the linksys is also a firewall. Check out the linksys at their website. One note though, if you want to enable port forwarding, you have to disable DCHP. Hope this helps.

I dont have DSL but Iam going to guess that you could use the internet connicting shareing that is in windows I use it for 2 PC and one connection and that way you will not have to worry about the IP address

You are correct. What your friend is trying to do will only work if his ISP provides multiple IP addresses, which most DSL providers do not. You need something to do routing, either hardware or software. Nightowl17's suggestion may be a workable alternative without investing any more money. Try this link for additional information.

you can do it with two computer without a router
some isp let you have two ip, assigning ip internally are for two computers to talk to each other
dsl do not use that, dsl uses PPPoE to get ip
so it has nothing to do with your assigned ip

Sympatico in Ontario Canada permits you to have two ip at the same time

If he's running Win98SE, he has Internet Connection Sharing. He can use one PC as a NAT router and connect it to dsl. With a(nother)NIC in it, connect the second machine to the downstream NIC and away you go. I did that for years. Now I do it with 2000 Pro. It's a snap

I've unsuccessfully tried the ICS thing before. Is there some caveat I need to be watching for? Since he DOES have 98SE this may work for him.

Hi there-

I have found that ICS in Win98SE works quite well if you keep the folowing in mind:

1. Use two different varieties of Ethernet card...then there won't be any problem with entering MAC addresses and the like.

2. Use NAT addresses (192.168.xxx.xxx) on the client and on the 2nd Ethernet card (the "downstream" interface)in the ICS server.

3. You may need to make a copy of the "Autodial" sub-key in the registry and place on it the ICS client's desktop. (this is probably not an issue with DSL, though)

If you cannot get ICS to work then you could try I free software proxy server. The best one I have found so far is called "Proksi". You can download it from

just do a search for proksi. It takes about 2 minutes to setup.
