I am a novice so excuse my ignorance.

I have a 3 gig harddrive on which i have linux Redhat 7.0 running. I want to install another 2 gig hardrive as well on which i want Win ME running. So basically i want to create a dual boot system with different OS's on the different hardrives. By the way i do not have access to Partition Magic as that computer is not connected to the internet and it's too big to fit on a floppy.

Do i just attach the other hardrive to the data cable with ME running on it or what ?

PS. will i have format the Linux partition(hardrive) i have already ?

SO how do i go about it then ?

You may have already found the solution to your question, but in case you haven't, I will offer this advise.

My system boots between Linux, Win. 98, and Win 2000 perfesional. I have two hard drives. The secret...Linux and Win 2k both have boot loading utilities that will give you the option to choose which OS you want to use. My Win 2k is on it's own hard drive. Linux and 98 share the other hard drive.

You can add the new hard drive and format it with "fdisk" unless ME is already on there. After that, you would install ME. You shouldn't have to mess with Red Hat in any way except to configure the boot loading utllity. After installing ME, Red Hat should give you the option to add ME to the boot loading menu so that you can choose between which OS you want to use.
You can configure this in the "Control Panel" section of Red Hat.

If you haven't gotten around to the solution already and you would like clarification, let me know and I'll see if I can help.

take care,

I am about to do a similar install. I have 98 running on a 40 gig drive with 1 partition. I have a second 10 gig drive with 2000. I am ordering red hat and mandrake and want to install them on the 40 gig drive. I know nothing of Linux and I want to learn. With the partitioning software in Linux, is this possible? And will I have the multi-boot options at the boot-up screen? Matt Wray

The easiest way to install Linux on a machine that already has WinDoze, is to install it onto a 2nd (or 3rd) hard drive. You will not need any partitioning software this way, and you will be able to allocate the amount of disk space that you need within the installation.

If you are installing different versions of Linux on the machine, then make sure that you choose Lilo as your boot manager. Install the first version of Linux, and then install the second version of linux

Your drive map should look something like this:

/dev/hda1 - This will be the existing Windoze partition
/dev/hdb5 - Linux Swap
/dev/hdb6 - Linux install.

It is possible to readjust the existing Windows partition using the tools that come with a Linux distro, but make sure that you back up your important stuff first, and that you are comfortable with the instructions.

Hope this helps!

there is another solution. and it is the one i am using. there is a company in california called romtec inc ( for about $50 + sh you can go to a hardware solution and physically separate you drives to different operating system.
