I have two DNS servers and I am just wondering if the way they are configured is causing replication issues between the two. I have one DNS server (primary) that has itself and the other DNS server as the DNS servers on the NIC and it has our Firebox for the Gateway and the other DNS server (secondary) has two external IP addresses (external DNS) and a different gateway (a separate router) setup on the NIC. The reason behind this is the previous administrator said that that way if the primary server went down then the secondary server would still be able to access DNS and the internet. I know my description of the current configuration may be a little confusing but I was hoping that maybe someone could help me figure out why we are having replication problems. I know that we are having replication problems becasue for one when we add a new workstation it will add the appropriate entries in AD users and computers and it will place a record in DNS but when you look at the other server there are no records of the new workstation even after waiting for several hours.

You should point both servers towards each other, and whoever is hosting your external dns. All clients should point only toward your internal dns servers. As to different gateways, you can have both servers using more than one gateway using a routing table, just tell them which one you want to use first and which one second, so if one goes down, it will use the second one. Just curious, why do you think you are having replication problems.

I know I am having replication problems because when I add a new workstation I can go into users and computers and it only shows up on one domain controller and not the other. Also, the file replication service event log is full of errors.
