Here we go again.

I have tried to send a FAX using Windows XP "driver". Everything goes through the steps, but there is always a message that says no dial tone.

I have tried this on my power machine, and my laptop. The only thing in common is WIN XP Sp2. The telephone number is good, but remember the error is no dial tone. It is not the hardware--I think.

Is this a known problem, and what is the fix?

I do have DSL, and I have tried removing the modem, filtering the fax with the modem on... Nothing seems to work. Something is killing these computers from seeing the dial tone.

Before XP, on the Laptop, Win ME (about 1 year ago) worked just fine....

Thanks,

Tom

First- I would confirm you do in fact have dial-tone with a phone.
Next- I would see if you can get access to the dial-tone with any other program like windows phone dialer or hyperterminal.

Also- if this is a DSL, and you are trying to use the dial-tone of the DSL, that is what must be filtered.

Thanks for the reply. I think this is somehow an XP SP@ issue. I can NOT get a dial tome with HyperTerminal. W will confirm this also on both computers. The line is good, and I do not think it matters, but it, the line tested out ok, with a line tester.

I have tried with and without DSL filters--still same.

I have a colleague that has a similar problem.

What is Windows Phone Dialer. I don't seem to have it, so I will install it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Tom

Besides the line tester, have you plugged a phone directly into the fax jack to make sure you can hear a clean dial tone without line noise? If its the same line that the DSL is on, you will need a filter. Also, if there are any splitters involved, please remove them while testing.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
