Hi,

I have a Cisco 1603R which I'm plugging into a Telstra NT1 plus II. When it tries to establish a connection it seems to get most of the way there and falls over. My provider tells me all the logins are successfull, so I'm not sure why it's failing the log on the console looks like so:

Can anyone explain whats causing it to hangup ? and any suggestged options I should look at to correct it ?

From the looks of this debug, it appears that the router is dialing out okay but is not completing the authentication phase with the other end. The problem may be with authentication setup (ie. chap/pap or usernames). Can you post the config of both routers.

Speaking of Telstra, which part of Oz you from?

Hi JimmyZ,

I did ponder that, so I phoned the provider, a shonky mob called Australis, and they reported that "the logins appear sucessfull" ? not that I was convinced .... here's the config which is pretty much exactly what I got out of the Cisco Config Maker ... I follow most of it except the dialer1 interface and how that all matches up with the BRI0 <shrug> ...

Exie,

I assume if you used the cisco config maker that you are not experienced with the cisco IOS syntax or may be new to the cisco game. So here is a high-level overview of BRI and Dialer1 concept. Your BRI is your physical interface. The Dialer profile is a virtual interface. You can assign multiple Dialer profiles to a physical BRI interface. For example you could have a profile configured to dial siteA and another to dial siteB. You would not be able to do this if you configured your dial config on the physical BRI without having change your dial-string etc..

Authentication requires that the username and ppp authentication methods match up on both ends. I noticed on your config that you do not have a username for the remote-router defined. I would refine your config a little to make it simpler. First of all can you clarify a couple of points before I post a sample config.

1. What is the name of the remote router you are trying to connect to?
2. Is this under your administration or the ISP? Can you please post the config for this.

JimmyZ

PS: Australis hey? I thought that was a brand of lipstick. ;-)

Hi Jimmyz,

Thanks for that, yes, I am pretty new to Cisco stuff. I've had only a minimal experience configuring them, and never from scratch.

Yes, the remote router is under the administration of my provider (Australis), unfortunately I dont have it's name.

All I know is that the 0198333040 number was the same number I used for my 56k dialup and is referred to as a 'MegaPOP'. I have sent an E-Mail to our provider asking for the details, however I'm not sure how forth coming they will be.

Thanks again for you help.

There are many reasons why your Router may be hanging up...but I think there is one thing that may be wrong.

First of all check the firmware version of your NT1 Plus II on your workstation by Querying the modem. Check the information on the modem. Note the FIRMWARE version.

If the firmware version is 2.03c or less...you are running on old firmware which is why you are having this disconnection problem. I am also an ISDN Home customer from Telstra and this is a major problem for users, if you check out the Whirlpool.net forums...you will see the heartache of hundreads of users just like yourself.

Unfortunately, there is no firmware update freely avaliable to the public...you must ring Telstra and ask for a Level 3 Technician for the firmware update. No other staff at Telstra will have any idea what you are talking about....but just inform them of the problems and ask for a Level 3 Technician or supervisor over and over again and eventually you will talk to someone that has seen an ISDN line before :)

The number for Telstra's ISDN Fault Reporting Bureau is 132255, and with a bit of luck, you will have some new firmware that will work with your Router
