1394 Firewire for laptops & video - only PCMCIA, Express Cards?

It seems a rip-off to see only $500+ laptops feature 1394 Firewire for video transfer. Otherwise PCMCIA, Express Cards with 1394 will work, but are quite expensive. With a desktop PC, it is low cost ($20 approx).

Any other ways to transfer video files to laptops? I've heard of USB/Firewire combo devices, but I'm not sure if that would help.

Thanks, Dave

nope, cannot agree there...

SABRENT SBT-PCA4 USB / IEEE 1394 PCMCIA Card 2 x USB 2.0 One 6-pin 1394a port and one 4-pin mini 1394a port - Retail $19.99

SYBA SD-PCB-2F IEEE 1394 PCMCIA Card - Retail $13.99

just two examples that are quite cheap... PC Express cards are double that, at least, and more in price...

now remember that PCMCIA is a dying technology (if it isn't already), and that PC EXPRESS has replaced it on newer type laptops (since three years or so)...

Ben, thanks.

I guess under $500 laptops (as a rough guide) don't have 1394 ports since most users won't do video for a while. Therefore get a card with 1394 ports as needed.

As for PCMCIA being a dying technology, my relatively new Toshiba Satellite & Vista has PCMCIA. If you have existing PCMCIA cards, it is an extra cost to replace them for new laptops. I don't see the advantage of newer type cards, yet - maybe later. Oh well.

You may find interesting. I do.
