How do I get 128 Cipher Strength on my IE6 Browser.
I have recently downloaded the latest and greatest from
Microsoft IE6 SP1 Verison 6.0.2800.1106 , But I still can't get 128 encription protection. All I get is 56-bit encription strength. Any Ideas ????
Are you sure?.....have you double-clicked on the "lock", in the lower right of IE window ,in status bar, when in a "https" website?????
Do you have the IE6 on CD....?
If you installed from download, you should have the IExxxx.cab files on hard drive, cause when you ran the "executable" download, it'll create .cab ('s) on your disk....just don't remember exactly where on disc...
Try to replace Schannel.dll using System File Checker.....The only thing you need to know is "where" to extract it from...If you have CD, it shouldn't be difficult, and I can guide you through it....
(I got my CD for around $5-$6 dollars US) ......at
(The "Internet Update Kit"....believe it or not the one above it is $10 or so(the Ie6 SP1 CD)......I got tired of waiting for 2-3 hr. dial-up download every time I wanted to re-install....
They say that their only charging for "shipping and handling"....not for software....Hmmmmm
As you can see it's US and Cananda only........double hmmmmmmm...
although I'm not sure it applies to you exactly.......
Probably, what I would first do , is uninstall IE6...then Re-install(hopefully you have all the files on disc, otherwise you may be there awhile)...and turn off any anti-virus software running in backgroung during re-install........
To uninstall go to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs.....choose "Internet Explorer 6 and SP1 and tools" or similar.....click add/remove....and choose "restore to previous version"......restart....and re-install.
Someone else may come up with an "exact fix" for specific problem, so hang in there......

These are just "my" thoughts....and should be carefully measured against other opinions....I try very hard to impart correct info at all times.
Just to follow up;
If you have to download the web stub for IE6 (Approx 479 Kb), which then makes you acces the internet again to download the full IE6 files, which can take 1-3 hrs. on dial-up, then try to "save those files to disk"........(not "open"/"run" from location)....Choose a place to download to....such as C:\...or C:\Program files(where you can find them).....then after full download...."Sign Off" the web and restart and scan that folder\files with anti-virus if necessary.......
Then restart again.....disable anti-virus(if it's running) and then go through installation......
I would not want to install while "connected to the web"......
I just didn't want you to think I implied turning of anti-virus while "on the web"...

1. Yes I am sure....Lock says "SSL Secured (56Bit)"
2. Yes I have the CD and Yes I have tried to replace the Schannel.dll from several different sources and versions.
3. Read your suggested page and downloaded three possible
solutions:
a:Internet Explorer Schannel.dll Update, December 1999
Bownload details: Windows 98 Security Update For Web Connections using SGC
cownload details: Windows 98 Security Update For Web Connections using SGC (High Encryption) (128-bit)
4. Have uninstalled and re-loaded IE6 Three times no change.
Any other suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks for your help so far. TT4U
Your welcome....:>)
Do you think it's possible the website in question doesn't support 128....
On the other hand;
If you'd like to try; go to tools>internet options>Advanced Tab drill down to the "security" section, and Uncheck the box for "Use TLS 1.0".....mine is unticked.
I remember reading something awhile back concerning this as a possible culprit.
Are you running 95..?(don't think you can even install IE6 on 95)......I ask cause this may be a limitation somehow(I'll search around for more info)
Are you going through a firewall??..or some older software that may inhibit this..
In any IE window...go "Help"...choose "About Internet Explorer" for quick info on cipher strength...
I'll keep racking the brain....

Hi, Half an hour I was reading this page to figure out the same problem.
I was Win2K SP1.
Upgraded to IE6, still 56bit, then IE6SP1, the same.
Then I upgrade the Win2k to SP3.
When open IE, it becomes 128bit.
Thanks for writing this page, which saves me the effort to reload IE6. . (Hope this can help you too)
TT4U,
The web page I need it for is my bank for online banking.
I am running Windows 98.
Yes I am going thru a firewall....ZoneAlarm.
I have tried it with it on and off. No change.
dylanloh,
I wish I had Win2K.
MicroSoft needs to come out with SP2 for IE6, maybe that
will fix this.
Click the Start button, and choose Shutdown.
Select Restart in MS-DOS mode.
Click the OK button.
In the field, type cd\windows\system.
Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
In the field, type ren schannel.dll schannel.old.
Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
In the field, type ren rsabase.dll rsabase.old.
Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
In the field, type ren rsaenh.dll rsaenh.old.
Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
In the field, type exit.
Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
Download and install either Internet Explorer 5.5 SP 1, or the appropriate version of the Microsoft Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack (128-bit encryption) for your version of Internet Explorer.
Right now, you occupy a point where three lines reach across the expanse of time and space and intersect only there, and that you and only you possess.
