We are trying to restore system state for a domain controller to get ready for a Disaster Recovery test in 2 weeks... (our first)
We are restoring with the options checked
Make restored copy authorated
make datasets primary
stop cluster if neccessary

We have used NTBACKUP to get the system state...and copied it to CD and recovered... we also used NTBAckup and copied that to tape to recover successfully.

But when we use Arcserver restore it says that its successful ...but It basically toasts the system and when we use Windows CD to Repair (we have to Repair on all versions of recovery)... AD just won't work.

What if anything should we do differently to get this to work? The Arcserve admin book just talks about the options above but no real direction...
Has any of you done this successfully with Arcserve's system state backup? Thanks in advance

HI,

Are you in the DSRM when performing this recovery? Have you tried deselecting the restore option "make authoritative" ?

So it Shall be Written!
So it Shall be Done!!

I am sorry its taken so long to get back...for some reason I would time out every time I tried to type a response...

Yes, when you do the restore non authoritative, it doesnt put the files back in the right spots... basically making new file folders on the root called Active Directory, etc.

I am thinking from everything I have read about AD its a difficult process at best and using the NTBackup you can get Microsoft to help... so Arcserve is out except to backup the NTBACKUP file(s) to tape...

Thanks for your help

Hi All

Along the same lines I am trying to recover a Windows 2000 server (non-dc stand-alone) and the restore of the system state session crashes after 100% file restore with permission errors righting to the registry. What I'd like to know from anyone is what steps should we be using as I cannot find anything in the Brightstor books or web site that says anything other than basic how to use a check box instructions, ie no real explanation of how a particular option actually affects the backup.

cheers
Tony
