Now I'm going to dig back aways here.. normally you would use something called a *vampire tap* where you will drill into the cable and install your tap. The cable had dots along it's length to tell you where you could drill and fill. If I had to guess, I would say the distance between them ( which was flexible.. you did not have to drill there) is based on a few things..
1: To keep a limit of taps per segment length? nomimally 500 meters with 100 taps
2: Issues of impedance?
3: Signal reflection issues and propagation delays?
