    danomac, again, thanks but that also didnt do the trick. i did what the article said and then noticed the part about "a hotfix is available so contact microsoft support services for options and pricing". of course, i'm not going to pay for a hotfix, so maybe i'll just do a hotfix...

    thanks for the suggestion - i checked and IPC$ is still shared. the thing is that old users can still log on using these win98 machines; it's just the new users who cannot.
