I brought a switch (Cisco 3524) home from work and configured it through Hyperterminal, setting it's ip address to 164.155.22.x I am having trouble saving the config to a TFTP Server (Solarwinds). I am using a laptop and have a home network that uses 192.168.x.x and am connected to it with...
I am helping to deploy a bunch of workstations for a company. After the image has been put on the new workstation we have to go in and add "COMPANYNAME WORKSTATION ADMINISTRATORS" to the Administrators Group and "COMPANYNAME WORKSTATION USERS" to the Power Users Group. I get prompted for an...
Thank you for all of the great ideas! I went out to the company last Friday. They have one computer in the house and 3 computers in the shop. They have already run ethernet cable between the house and the shop (sorry, I didn't know this when I asked the question). It's blue ethernet cable...
Thank you for the ideas! I think you're right, running a cable would be best. Is there a limit as to how far of a cable run you can do without having problems?
I'm not sure if they are going to need internet connectivity or not. I'll find out today.
I have a friend who works out of his house. He has a small manufacturing business that is located in a shop about 50 yards from the house. He wants the shop's computers (2 or 3) to be able to run Quickbooks from the one computer that is in the house.
Would a wireless network work for this...
I am getting this message in the backup log after each night's backup.
Access denied to directory \Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\Alert Manager\Queue.

When I try to browse to this directory I get an "access denied" error. Veritas told me to look at this...
I am trying to use the backup program included with Windows 2000 Server to backup data and the system state to an external hard drive. Is there a way to schedule the daily backup to save to a different file name each time it does a backup, or would I need a full version of Backup Exec to do...
I want to setup the time service on a Windows 2000 domain controller (getting tired of seeing the event errors.
I understand how to activate it (see below), but is this something that I need to do everytime the server is rebooted?
After setting the time on the DC, do clients automatically...
My wife's company recently had a new server installed with Exchange 2003. The person who installed it setup a few Groups, some of which have Contacts that have External e-mail addresses only. When she wants to send an e-mail to one of those Contacts in Outlook (TO:) she has to open and expand...
I am setting up my first Win2K Server and it is going to be a domain controller for a small company with 5 users.
They have a registered domain name that is very long. I would like the company to register a similar but shorter name. The new name is available.
If I put the new name in when...
So, these messages are a result of people who are trying to spam us from the outside, not a result of relaying spam?
Should I turn off ALL notifications? There are 5 or 6 choices of what to allow in Notifications.
I am getting about 50 messages a day in the Administrator account, both inbound and outbound mail failures that all seem to relate to SPAM messages.
I have done the Spam Relaying test, the one where you telnet into the Exchange Server and type Helo Me, Mail From: Rcpt To:, etc... It comes back...
My wife brought home some backup tapes from her company. She said that she wants me to recover messages from someone's "deleted items" box off of the tapes.
Is this even possible?
I know that they use Backup Exec and they use DDS3, both of which I have on my server at home...
I am going to put a small Windows 2000 network into a buisness that is currently had DSL and is using AOL for e-mail.

Thanks Justin 2000. I'll have to study that page hard to make sure that I can remove the edb.chk file that they are talking about.
The message I gave above came up when trying to start the information store. However, the event ID has many of the 1120 and 5000 errors that are mentioned in...
I'm getting this message when trying to start the Exchange Information Store:
"the microsoft exchange information store service returned specific error 4294965485"
What does that mean? How can I fix it?
We are using NAT via a Sonicwall firewall. I just found out that the company that hosts our internet is changing ISP's, which is the reason for the change.
Does Exchange server need to be pointed to the new ISP address somehow? Is there anywhere else that I would need to change IP's in the...
Our ISP is changing all of the external ip's on us. I realize that I would have to change the ip's in the router and the firewall, but where would I have to change ip's on the server?
We have Exchange 5.5, DNS, and DHCP running on one Windows 2K Server.
Never mind. I got it!
Thanks for your help mhkwood!
I changed my ip to a static 192.168.2.10 and my default gateway to 192.168.1.1 (so I could still get internet access), started the VPN, and was able to browse to the files on the server without any problem...
Thanks again!!!
I'm a bit confused. I thought that you needed to be on the same subnet in order to browse the network at work. It seems strange to me that my PC at home with an IP of 192.168.1.105 cannot browse over VPN to files on a server that has an ip address of 192.168.1.50. Could it be because someone...
