Just to confirm what i believe to be correct, can someone look at the below and tell me how much memory is available to a process on this system if i start one? If you can explain why that might be helpful too..
Thanks

I have a hard time finding anything on IBM's website :)
This is a brand new server. First time i've powered it on and had a laptop connected to it. Of course at this point i've rebooted it several times trying to get logged in. AIX is certainly installed on it.
Anyways i messed with it some...
How do you know that? i.e. i'd like to know in the future how i can determine that myself.
Currently i have a laptop hooked up to SA2 on the server with a null modem cable. I see the initial "loading software" ascii screen and even the part where it says "network keyboard . ...
I have a 7028-6c1 (p610) server.. Brand new. When it boots is eventually stops at a blank screen and has error 0c31. Where do i go to find out what that means? The servers didnt include a printed book to lookup codes in and i'm not sure where on IBM's site to look for this type of info...
I have a tape from a customer which I need to copy. It has never been inventoried or cataloged and is not from my environment. How do i go about copying it?
If this tape is a sequence 2 in a 4 sequence set, would i need to copy the others as well if all I cared about was the sequence 2? Or can...
I agree i prefer BackupExec to Arcserve but mostly due to Veritas having better support then CA.
On the other hand try looking into CommVault. I recently had a lengthy conversation with their engineers and they are doing some neat things over there. I can't comment on their support or whether...
Tape capacity is also determined by your drive. Simply upgrading the tapes is usually not sufficient and often results in what you're experiencing and thats an inability to even write to them. You usually also have to buy a newer generation of tape drive. Check your drive compatability matrix...
And your thinking is DVD's are more reliable? Far from it.. In fact from what i've read they are less reliable then tape. They are highly susceptable to scratching and damage and you'd better check the shelf life on how long the data on a burned DVD lasts. Also considering technology changes...
I have a customer with 500 tapes from a software called Live Vault. It seems to install on Win2k just fine. It even accepts my Storagetek Timberwolf 9730 (DLT8000) library as a library. Problem is i don't think it likes the library. I don't really know how to use the product but if i put a...
Either option sounds workable though i've never personally used a USB to SCSI adapter. Interesting concept. But the speeds are all far more adequate then what your tape drive(s) can handle so i would think it would work. You'll probably be a pioneer int he field :)
Depends on how old the drive is and what the drive is compatable with. I'm not familiar with your drive nor am i going to do the legwork (google, HP) to figure it out. Generally speaking though, yes there are drives that are too old to read DLTIV tapes and can only read DLTIII in which case...
I'd ask in the Novell forum what people would recommend as a backup solution. Novell can be somewhat tricky. Just looking at the number of servers and amount of data though, it doesn't seem like that much to me. Any server and a small SCSI attached AIT (4mm) library or something similar should...
So if you run a simple little test.. make a directory and touch/vi some test files in it.. back it up twice in a row.. does it back up both files on both runs? I suspect not..
What i suspect is happening is your retention settings are expiring old copies of data by time the next backup runs and...
Assuming the above is true and you are indeed backing up all files, you'll need to give more info on how you do your incremental backups (how are they being initiated? can we see your schedule that initiated them? "q sched f=d" for the one in question). It might also be useful to see...
Couple potential problems with it..
1. You'll need to halt the oracle DB before taking an image of the laptop.
2. If the person in question breaks his laptop (spills coffee on it or something), and you replace his laptop, it must have the same exact hardware configuration as the previous one...
Currently with 3.4 when i do a restore the only way to see if it's done is to check the corresponding log file. With multiple restores going thats kind of pain to constantly flip back and forth between them. If anyone is using 4.5 has this changed at all? Is there anything graphical that lets...
I've never had to reboot any of my servers to swap disks and i've never had an OS problem from replacing disks with our polywell servers (3ware/IDE based. Hot swappable). You can also use older disks and use your existing backup software (provided it backs up to disk) using a server like this...
At my previous company we used Tivoli Storage Manager in exactly that capacity and it worked well. The backup client installs as a service and basically we'd set it to periodically poll the backup server to see if it had to do any backups. Thus when it was connected to a network capable of...
