SOLVED IT!!!!...and the culprit is.....Smarthost!!!! I have smarthost configured in EX1 to connect to our spam filter...I removed it and restart the SMTP service and the 1,769 messages were gone.

Modify your DNS mx records to have a metric of 10 for the first server and 20 for the second. Of course this will only work for incoming internet mail.
