Don't you need to configure VLAN's on fast ethernet? I haven't worked on VLAN's myself but was made to understand that it needs to be configured on fast ethernet ports. You can configure trunking as well if you want to manage everything from a master/domain switch like the catalyst 5000...

pplewis is right...select the interface to assign each vlan to a particular port. The command I'm familiar with is vlan-membership [static or dynamic] vlan#. From privilevged mode use show vlan (or show vlan# for a specific vlan) to see which switch ports have been associated with the vlan.
Remember to use ? either at the prompt or after typing a command (hit the spacebar once after the command before typing the ?) You will see a list of options if your syntax was correct. Have you assigned an IP address to this switch? If so you should be able to access it through your browser...
Did you type anything after VLAN? If not, you can/should start in one of two ways: Type a question mark ? to get a list of options or enter vlan #, where # is the vlan numeric ID. You can create multiple vlans but each must have a numeric assignment within the range for that switch. You also...
