Thanks to all of you who helped with your replies.
I changed the scope of the dhcp on the server and disabled the one on the router. That seemed to be creating a big conflict.
Another weirdity was that the switch had a bad connection or something where it kept flickering on and off. Once that...
wdoellefeld,
Thank you for your response... "Sounds like the default gateway in the DHCP settings on the server is wrong. Or the scope has run out of IPs. IS this a domain or workgroup?"
It is a domain.
Should the DHCP settings on the server be the same or different than that of the router?
I did already try disabling DHCP on the router and NOBODY could go online!! Grrr.
As for the IP pools, I didn't check the one on the server, but the DHCP on the router is 10-30. (Dot sure how to check the server...)
Thanks, Judy
Something very weird is happening with our network. When our tech first set it up, everyone (who was supposed to) had internet access. Now, it is funky from one day to the next. For example, today, only the users who have access to our payroll program can access the internet. (yesterday nobody...
I had a problem accessing WUpdate and mcafee sites too with one of our computers at work. It was driving me crazy.
Finally, ran msconfig and disabled all the mcafee files (I think it was the instant updater at fault) from loading at startup and BINGO! - immediate access to wupdate and mcafee...
I am looking for similar software. We used to have Sygate Office Network, which did a great job of activity logging and reporting. Maybe this will work for you -- although we were on dial-up and W98, and now we're on broadband DSL and W2000.
So...I don't even know if we can use sygate any...
When I go to windows udpate on one of our pc/s, the screen says it is checking for latest version...then it says "windows update software did not update successfully. Below are some suggestions..."
It mentions accepting the trust certificate, checking IE security settings and a few other items...
Thought I'd let you all know what the problem turned out to be -- a bad hub.
That was actually our first thought, but initial tests of switching cables around failed to identify that - the reason was that the cables were MIS-LABELED...ask me how I know...(sheepish grin) Naturally, switching...
Well, there are many suggestions here - thank you to all...you're the best! I believe I will try the process of elimination...and so far, there are two computers that whiz into the shared files and two that do not (mine is one of them)! grrr Also will try the cable thingie last mentioned.
Time...
Thanks, rockerfellerz. Each computer is set up to automatically virus scan on startup, but I have not heard of the adaware...will try that.
Actually, the "server" is just another computer on the network where all the files are shared, BUT it does have more memory, larger drive, etc...
I hope someone can help me. We have a LAN (W98 se) at work - ten users in all on a peer-to-peer network. Over the last month, the network has slowed down to a crawl. If only one or two people are on, it is not too bad, but it can take as long as a minute to open a file. I don’t understand it...
Arrrgh...I am the host modem for several other computers on our LAN, with a dial-up connection. Sometimes (and some days more than others) when either I initiate a dial-up or another computer does (or even sometimes in the middle of an internet session), my computer gives me the blue screen of...
We have a peer to peer Windows 98 network with about 7 computers on it. My computer is the "hub" for the internet access (we use a dialup modem which is on my computer)- though it is not the Server.
Whenever someone on the network wants to go online, they click on their internet...
We ordered some non-epson ink from a local dealer (southern california) for work after agonizing about ruining the printers! Well, it didn't ruin the printer, but the quality was soooo bad we returned them. Black was gray -- there were missing spots on the page, etc.
The wierdest thing was that...
Well I messed around with the options in MS Picture It -- found a way to adjust the printer settings and found an option in my printer settings that I never knew existed: Photo Optimizer! That did the trick.
The only thing that is puzzling now is this: the picture printed out at actual size (3...
I need to print out some b x w photos at high quality in a collage. I scanned them in at 400 ppi (UMAX astra 1200). I then converted to jpeg (using Adobe Photodeluxe) and exported to MS Picture It to make the collage. When I went to print, I got repeated horizontal banding in the photos.
I...
Uh oh, my face is red. :{ The problem of my recycle bin eating up everything in sight was due to the fact that I had enabled "trash guard," a McAfee component, some time last week. When it said it would protect my files from being deleted, I thought it sounded like a good idea (at...
Paul - Thank you. I followed the instructions on the url you recommended. Unfortunately, there is no change in the operation of the recycle bin.
To give you an example, I opened up my eudora program, opened the inbox, did NOT open any messages, closed the program and looked in the (previously...
Last week my recycle bin started bingeing. It eats all temporary files (like 100 at a pop). Then, when I WANT to delete something, it doesn't ask me if I want the file to go to the recycle bin, it just deletes the file permanently.
What is going on?
Thanks - no, it was the only printer in the properties. I did a thorough diagnostic including unplugging cable, etc. Last step was to look in the BIOS, and lo and behold, the port was set to "compatible" instead of "bidirectional".
Setting it to bidirectional fixed...
