Only one more question... I've read elswhere ...(http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm) that the info on /cmd... ipconfig/all ie the dns servers it reports there, are the ones that have to be input on the Tcp/Ip settings section...? As opposed to the router ip ie 192.168.2.1...

Hi... Problem solved... I needed to an update which did not appear through windows update!!!? It is a conflict for Laptops with built in web cams,preventing the system from shutting down. Fixed by KB909667. This will help future users. Phew!

Hi there are no errors on the drive...it was an oem install originally but I have installed all drivers from the sony recovery disc manually....?

Hi...have tried reinstalling sound card drivers. No clues in event viewer... I can't really tell if safe mode is better because it seems to be tempremental...it may shutdown a few times in a row and the all of a sudden the next time it just hangs?
