With the advice you all generously offered, the computer that I'm considering most seriously has this:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 AM2 3800+ Processor, with the AMD 690 Asus M2A-VM Motherboard and 2GB DDR2 PC4200 Memory (1GB x 2)
Will likely place the order in 2 weeks... thanks again...
I very much appreciate the advice you have all offered, as until I asked the question I was unsure which direction to go. Now I know that it'll be a dual core -- thank you!
In terms of stability and processing speed, is there an advantage to getting a "Core 2 Duo" rather than a 3.+GHz processor?
Note that I mostly do the average type of computer work -- a little light Photoshop for photo editing, but no high-end video construction or anything remotely close to...
Thank you eyec -- that is exactly the kind of site I was hoping to find.
If anyone knows of any others that are similar to explabs, please do let us know.
Much appreciated...

Does anyone know if an online service exist which will scan a webpage and then report whether or not that page is attempting to impose a virus/spywear etc?
It would work something like this...
I would go to the service homepage and enter a URL for some other site;
They would use their tools...
One thing I love about these forums is learning something new ... thanks smah, in all the years I've been working with Windows, that has never occured to me!

Thanks mbrooks for the info -- that was what I was concerned about. As I said, this particular server will not show file names that start with a period, therefore I cannot see it to do the rename. I'll re-upload the .htaccess file with a Macintosh FTP program (Mac's do not require that files...
When I upload an .htaccess file that I create with NotePad, it of course wants to add the .txt extension. Generally when the upload is complete, I use the "rename" feature of my FTP program to remove the .txt.
However I use one hosting service that for whatever reason, will not show me files...
Thanks very much MOrac for such an informative explanation. I do not generally use php, and would guess that the conflict lies in the way that particular script (from an archive) was written. At this point I have removed the htaccess entirely, so as to not create another problem. Live and...
Thanks Wishdiak. Yes, that was intentional -- I wanted to show every possible format that I had tried (but each of them was tried one at a time -- not as a group).
Am getting the same result with your htaccess -- at this point it must be a server glitch. The only one that works is the one that...
Forgot to mention... the last htaccess format DID allow me access -- all others however returned "Forbidden".(worked ok)
<Files *.php>
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from all
</Files>
I've had a strange experience with htaccess. I tried adding a .htaccess file to a subfolder (2 levels from top) on my website. The purpose was to allow pages from within my domain to access the pages in that folder via internal links, but no access for external links placed outside the domain...
I had already ordered the card prior to reading your most recent postings. Here is what the specs said:
---------------------------
VIA 5-port USB 2.0 PCI Card
VIA VT6202 chipset (4+1 USB 2.0 ports)
32-bit 33MHz host interface compliant to PCI 2.2
Supports PCI power management interface 1.1...
Thank you both for taking the time to walk me through this. I really like the idea of simply getting a new 2.0 USB card for the computer, and moving the Maxtor HD, the Zip, and the Sony onto it, leaving the hubs for less important stuff like the surge protector, the printer, and the digital card...
Thanks garebo for the heads-up ... I was under the (perhaps false) impression that USB allowed multiple connections of many devices, without any concern.
This particular machine is one I bought several years over the web from a software engineer in Florida, who built it himself. It has 2 USB...
